First Half vs Second Half Corners: Which Half Produces More?

Do football matches produce more corners before or after half-time? To find out, we analysed 141,316 matches in the Footiqo football database with complete first-half and second-half corner data.

The results show a clear overall difference: matches averaged 4.58 corners in the first half and 5.12 in the second half. In total, 52.8% of all recorded corners came after half-time.

First Half vs Second Half Corners: Overall Results

Across the full sample, matches averaged 9.70 corners across the two halves combined. Of those, 4.58 came in the first half and 5.12 after half-time.

That means the second-half average was around 11.8% higher than the first-half average.

There is, however, an important distinction between the aggregate totals and what happens in an individual match. Although the second half accounted for 52.8% of all corners, it recorded strictly more corners than the first half in only 49.9% of matches.

This can happen because the size of the difference matters in the aggregate calculation. Matches with particularly large second-half corner counts can push the overall second-half average higher even though the second half does not finish ahead in a majority of individual matches.

Which Football Leagues Have More Second-Half Corners?

The pattern is not equally strong in every competition. The table below compares leagues with at least 300 matches containing complete first-half and second-half corner data.

The historical results show meaningful differences between competitions.

Japan’s J1 League has the highest second-half share in the qualifying historical sample. Across 2,633 matches, the league averaged 4.30 corners in the first half compared with 5.24 in the second. That gives the second half a 55.0% share of all corners and an average uplift of 0.95 corners per match.

England’s League Two also shows a pronounced difference. Across 3,414 matches, the average rises from 4.49 corners before half-time to 5.28 afterwards, with 54.1% of corners occurring in the second half.

Other competitions near the top of the ranking include Australia’s A-League, Austria’s Bundesliga, Egypt’s Premier League, the English Championship and MLS.

The pattern also appears in several major European competitions. For example, the English Premier League sample contains 4,220 matches and averages 4.86 first-half corners compared with 5.50 in the second half, an uplift of 0.64 corners.

First-Half vs Second-Half Corner Averages by League

The chart below highlights competitions with some of the largest differences between their historical first-half and second-half corner averages. Only leagues meeting the minimum historical sample requirement are considered.

The comparison is useful because a high second-half average alone does not necessarily mean that a competition is unusually weighted towards the second half. Leagues with high overall corner counts can naturally produce large figures in both periods.

Looking at the gap between the first-half and second-half averages helps reveal where the distribution of corners changes most after the break.

Leagues with the Largest Second-Half Corner Uplift

The J1 League stands out in the historical data, increasing from 4.30 corners in the first half to 5.24 in the second, an uplift of 0.95 corners per match.

The Netherlands’ Eerste Divisie also shows a sizeable difference, rising from 4.55 to 5.40 corners, while England’s League Two moves from 4.49 to 5.28.

Australia’s A-League follows a similar pattern, although at a higher overall level: 5.05 first-half corners and 5.84 second-half corners.

Among the competitions shown in the comparison, the difference therefore appears across leagues with quite different overall corner environments. It is not limited to competitions that simply have the highest total number of corners.

Current Season First-Half vs Second-Half Corners

Historical samples provide a more stable comparison, but current-season data can show whether similar patterns are appearing in recent matches.

The table below includes current competitions with at least 30 qualifying matches. These figures should be interpreted more cautiously because the samples are considerably smaller and will continue to change as more matches are played.

Several competitions currently show particularly large differences between the two halves.

In Croatia’s HNL, the current sample of 34 matches averages 3.88 corners in the first half and 5.41 in the second. That corresponds to a second-half share of 58.2%.

The English Championship currently averages 4.67 first-half corners and 6.11 second-half corners across 83 matches, while League Two moves from 4.21 to 5.60 across 72 matches.

The Eredivisie also shows a substantial gap in the current data, with averages of 4.61 and 6.00 corners respectively.

These current-season results are interesting, but they should not be treated in the same way as the historical rankings. A handful of high-corner matches can have a much larger impact on a sample of 30–80 fixtures than on one containing several thousand.

Why Are There More Corners in the Second Half?

The data establishes that, across the full Footiqo sample, more corners are recorded after half-time. It does not establish a single cause for that difference.

There are several plausible football-related factors that could influence the pattern. Match state changes as the final whistle approaches, teams that need a goal may attack more aggressively, substitutions can alter playing styles and matches can become increasingly stretched.

Those explanations are reasonable possibilities, but this study measures what happens rather than attempting to prove why it happens. Establishing causation would require a different analysis controlling for scoreline, time, team strength and other match conditions.

Second-Half Share vs Matches with More Second-Half Corners

One of the most interesting results in the study is the difference between these two measures.

Second-Half Share considers every corner across the entire sample. If a match produces three first-half corners and eight second-half corners, those five additional second-half corners have a meaningful effect on the aggregate result.

Matches Higher in 2H, by contrast, simply asks whether the second-half total was greater than the first-half total in each individual match.

This explains how 52.8% of all corners can occur in the second half even though only 49.9% of matches have strictly more second-half corners. The magnitude of the differences matters for the first metric but not for the second.

How the Study Was Calculated

This analysis uses match data from the Footiqo football database. Only completed matches with recorded home and away corner figures for both the first and second half were included.

For every qualifying match:

  • First-half corners = home first-half corners + away first-half corners.
  • Second-half corners = home second-half corners + away second-half corners.
  • 2H Uplift = second-half corners minus first-half corners.
  • 2H Share = second-half corners as a percentage of all first-half and second-half corners.
  • Matches Higher in 2H = percentage of matches where the second-half corner total was strictly greater than the first-half total.

The overall analysis contains 141,316 qualifying matches.

For the historical league comparison, a competition must have at least 300 qualifying matches. This minimum was introduced to reduce the influence of unusually small samples.

For the current-season comparison, the minimum is 30 qualifying matches. Current-season rankings should therefore be treated as provisional rather than long-term league characteristics.

Limitations

Data coverage is not identical across every competition or season. The number of qualifying matches is therefore displayed alongside every league so that the size of the underlying sample can be considered when comparing results.

The figures describe historical results and should not be interpreted as a prediction that a particular future match will produce more corners in the second half.

Likewise, differences between competitions do not by themselves explain their cause. Playing style, scoreline, team quality, match situation and other factors may all contribute to the patterns observed.
